Skywalking Cat Cafe, Myeongdong

<하늘을 걷는 고양이, 캣 카페 명동점>

명동 차없는 거리에 고양이 카페가 들어섰다.

명동은 우리나라에서 손에 꼽히는 복잡하고도 활기찬 대표적인 상권이다. 오래된 건물들과 다양한 매장들, 수많은 외국인 관광객들로 발디딜 틈 없이 바글바글한 이곳 명동에서, 잠시 고양이들과 한가로운 시간을 보내기에 이곳 하늘을 걷는 고양이카페는 제격인 장소이다. 하늘을 걷는 고양이 명동점은 3호점으로서 이번이 세 번째 매장이다.

The new cat cafe is open on the side of pedestrian street of Myoung-dong. Myoung dong has been one of most lively and crowded commercial districts in Korea. Surrounded by all these buildings and stores, with numerous foreigners on every corner of the street, this ‘sky walking cat’ is a perfect place for people to get relaxed and get some refresh with cats. This cat cafe in Myung-dong is the third branch of ‘Skywalking Cat Cafe’.

그간 했던 프로젝트들은 대부분 사람이 이용하는 공간을 다루는 것들이었다. 하지만 이번 프로젝트에서는 동물과 인간의 행태를 함께 고려한 디테일들을 많이 고민하게 만들었다. 공간은 크게 세 부분 (홀, 커피 존, 고양이 화장실과 다용도실이 있는 직원실) 로 나뉘어 진다. 공간 구성에 있어 기존에 우리나라와 해외에 존재하는 고양이 카페들을 많이 답습했다. 고양이 카페에서 홀과 다용도실을 구획하는 벽은 필연적으로 생기게 마련인데, 이를 어떤 식으로 재미있게 풀어낼지를 고민했다. 기능적으로 고양이들의 활동들과 어린 아이들이 방문했을 때 다치지 않도록 모서리 는 대부분 곡선 형태로 마감했다. 그리고 가장 단순한 형태들을 모아서 홀에서 바라보는 직원실 파사드(입면)를 구성했다.

all the projects we have done were mostly for people. However, this project is focused on the details of uses for people and animals. Cafe space consists of three parts which are hall, coffee zone, and resting place for cats and employees. To form a perfect space for cats and people, many studies and site visits on the existing cat cafes had been done. the wall between utility room and hall is necessary thus we focused on how to be creative with this wall. every edge of the space is finished with round and curved shape in order to create harmless environment for kids and cats. Lastly, the facade of resting place for employees is created with the simplest shapes

그림을 벽에 걸어두면, 우리는 프레임 안에 놓여진 표면을 통해 어떤 풍경들을 상상한다. 이 카페의 컨셉은 높은 곳을 좋아하는 고양이가 부뚜막에 올라 있는 풍경의 연속이다. 카페 상호에 부합되게, 천장을 하늘빛 바탕에 뭉게구름을 그려놓은 듯 연출한 부분은 하늘을 걷는 고양이의 모습을 상상하며 만든 결과물이다. 건축의 틀, 그 경계 내에서 슬라브와 슬라브 사이에 존재하는 내부 공간이지만 이 경계를 흐릿하게 하고자 했다. 따라서 공간에 서서 올려다보았을 때 보이는 면 전체를 하늘로 치환하여, 마치 옥상에 올라와 있는 듯한 인상을 강하게 심어주길 원했다.

When you put picture on the wall, you get to imagine certain images through the frame. the concept of this cafe is to capture an image of cats walking on the wall. The ceiling painted in sky blue with fluffy clouds is to create an image of cats walking on the sky. We tried to blur the certain boundaries of architecture, even though this space is just one of many spaces formed between slabs.

카페 천장에 연결된 브릿지는 나무로 만든 성으로부터 매장의 반대편 끝까지 연결되어 있다. 고양이들은 실제로 이 유리 브릿지를 좋아한다. 밑에서 보는 사람들은 간접적으로 고양이가 하늘을 걷는 장면을 경험할 수 있다.

자작나무를 사용, 곡선의 형태를 지닌 오브제는 공간 전체를 가로지르며 덩그러니 놓여있다. 카페를 찾아온 손님들에게 고양이들과 함께 앉을 수 있는 장소로써의 기능적 역할을 함과 동시에, 고양이들의 유려한 몸동작을 형상화하면서 따뜻한 공간의 분위기를 연출하는 디자인적 역할을 충분히 수행한다.

The bridge is connected to the ceiling which starts from the end of the café to the wooden castle. Cats love this bridge. People under this bridge see cats walking on the translucent bridge and get an experience of watching cats walking on the sky.

The objects made of birch tree is crossing the entire space. This object representing the elegant shape of a cat and provides seats for visitors and cats. It is functional yet representable for the identity of this café and creates the cozy atmosphere.

벽의 색감과 질감, 바닥 마감재의 종류와 색상은 마지막까지 우리에게 큰 숙제였다. 고양이와 어우러지는 자연적인 재료들로만 느낌을 연출하다 보니 어떤 곳은 다소 차갑게 느껴졌다. 미색 계열의 자작나무를 선정하게 된 것은 이 곳이 카페를 찾아오는 이들에게 따뜻한 분위기의 공간으로 기억되었으면 하는 클라이언트의 바램을 충족시키기 위해서이다.

The colors, materials, textures, and kinds of finishes were considered to create an ideal space. At first, only natural materials were used based on our intention to create a space that goes harmoniously with cats. However, it made some spaces less lively. So, to fulfill the client’s wish, ivory and cream-colored birch wood was used to give a hint of warmth and to create welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
